2024 Good As Gold Ceremony

Celebrating Community Champions

In the heart of every vibrant community lies a network of individuals whose selfless acts of kindness and dedication ripple through organizations and out into the community, transforming lives. At the annual Good As Gold Ceremony, hosted by University of Illinois Springfield, Junior League of Springfield, and United Way of Central Illinois, we have the privilege of shining a spotlight on these remarkable individuals who embody the true spirit of service and compassion.

The Good As Gold Ceremony is not just an event; it's an annual celebration of community, a testament to the power of ordinary people coming together to do extraordinary things. Each year, we gather to honor and recognize local volunteers whose contributions have made a profound difference in the lives of others.

From organizing food drives to mentoring youth, from advocating for the vulnerable to beautifying our neighborhoods, the volunteers we honor at the Good As Gold Ceremony represent the diversity that is needed to enrich a community. Their efforts, big and small, inspire each of us and reminding us of the incredible impact we can have when we choose to lend a helping hand.

One of the highlights of the ceremony is hearing the stories behind each volunteer's journey. Every individual recognized has a unique story to tell, filled with moments of triumph, challenges overcome, and lives touched. These stories serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of kindness and the profound connections that bind us together as a community.

Among the honorees at this year's ceremony is the Good As Gold Business Honor Roll. This list highlights Springfield businesses that embrace community service through practices and programs that encourage their employees to volunteer, support and organize service efforts, and bolster nonprofit and charitable organizations through corporate and individual giving.

Congratulations to the winners of the following categories: Star Staff: Dre Duvendack; Star Student: Brandon Damm; and Youth Volunteer: Natasia Brown.

As we celebrate the achievements of our community champions, we also renew our commitment to fostering a culture of service and philanthropy. We invite everyone to join us in this journey, whether by volunteering their time, donating to a worthy cause, or simply spreading kindness wherever they go.

One example of exemplary volunteerism is the Distinguished Volunteer Award Winner. Congrats first to the finalists, Cheryl Lipe and Andy Smith. The winner, Donna Brown, founded iMagicNation in August 2013 which is a nonprofit geared toward improving children's reading skills. Donna says that "Through volunteering, I am depositing into young people things it has taken me a lifetime to know and understand." What a great gift to give the up and coming generation - the knowledge of those who have gone before. Thank you, Donna, and congratulations!

Last but not least was the recognition of the Organization of the Year. Recognized for its work with immigrants and refugees, Springfield Immigrant Advocacy Network exists because of volunteers, says founder Veronica Espina. Congratulations for the incredible work being done in our community to ensure that all individuals can thrive.

In the end, the Good As Gold Ceremony is a celebration of the best of humanity—the kindness, generosity, and compassion that unite us all. It is a reminder that, together, we have the power to create a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.

To all our honorees and volunteers, thank you for your selfless service and unwavering dedication. You truly are the heart and soul of our community, and we are forever grateful for everything you do.

Let's continue to shine brightly, together, as we strive to make our community and the world a better place for all.
