How United Way is Changing Lives in Central Illinois
by: Marne Fauser
When Maria lost her job last year, her world turned upside down. As a single mother of two, she had always worked hard to provide for her children, but an unexpected layoff left her without an income. Rent, utilities, and groceries became overwhelming expenses, and she didn’t know where to turn.
"I remember lying awake at night, wondering how I was going to make it through the next month," Maria recalls. "I applied for jobs, but without childcare or financial assistance, it felt impossible."
That’s when she discovered 211, a United Way resource that provides localized assistance to those facing crisis like these. The support team at 211 then put Maria in touch with United Way grant partners which focused on her financial security needs. With their help, Maria was able to get temporary assistance to cover essentials, enroll in job training, and receive career coaching. Within months, she landed a stable position that provided her with the security she had lost.
"United Way gave me hope when I needed it most," she says. "They didn’t just provide resources—they connected me to people who truly cared about my future. Thanks to them, I now have a steady income, and my kids have what they need to thrive."
Maria’s story is just one example of how United Way of Central Illinois is transforming lives. Every year, United Way invests in programs that support families who struggle, so they don’t have to face hardships alone.
But none of this happens without the generosity of volunteers and community members who step up to create real change.
Be Part of the Change: Join United Way’s Day of Action
While Maria’s journey has turned a corner, thousands of individuals and families in Central Illinois still need support. The good news? You can help make a difference.
On Friday, April 25, 2025, United Way is hosting Springfield Day of Action, a community-wide volunteer event where hundreds of local volunteers will come together to tackle projects that strengthen our community.
New this year is the Volunteer Appreciation Lunch. Before the event kicks off, we invite all volunteers to join us for a special lunch at The Salvation Army at 11:30pm, catered by Café Moxo, thanks to our generous underwriters, PNC. This is our way of saying thank you for being a part of this important day. During lunch, we’ll also be honoring outstanding volunteers with acknowledgment awards—because every act of service makes a difference.
Did you know that every volunteer will receive a FREE Day of Action t-shirt to wear while making an impact. It’s not just a shirt—it’s a symbol of unity and community strength.
What Will Volunteers Do?
Each year, the Day of Action includes a variety of projects that directly support the people who need it most. Whether you’re assembling care kits for families, revitalizing community spaces, or helping a local nonprofit, your time and effort will leave a lasting impact.
No special skills are required—just a willingness to help and a passion for your community. Whether you come solo, with coworkers, or as part of a group, you’ll walk away knowing you played a role in making Central Illinois stronger.
Why Volunteer?
United Way’s Day of Action isn’t just about giving back—it’s about coming together to create a better future for everyone.
Make a tangible impact: Whether it’s improving a community center, packing meals, or helping local nonprofits, your efforts will directly benefit families in need.
Meet like-minded changemakers: Day of Action is an opportunity to connect with people who share your passion for making a difference.
