In an inspiring collaboration that promises to transform communities across the state, United Way of Central Illinois has partnered with the Field Foundation of Illinois to support state-wide funding as part of Healing Illinois, a racial healing initiative funded by the State of Illinois Department of Human Services. Healing Illinois is an initiative designed to promote unity, equity, and understanding among Illinois' diverse communities, and its impact is already being felt throughout the region.
By engaging organizations of all sizes, Healing Illinois is nurturing the roots of racial equity and social justice that will allow Illinois to flourish as a united and inclusive community.
A Vision of Healing and Equity
The central focus of Healing Illinois is to establish the fundamental building blocks for racial healing and equity in communities across the state. Healing Illinois will provide $4.5 million in grants across the state to begin, or continue, the work of racial healing. The initiative has several key goals:
Building Knowledge and Understanding: One of the most crucial elements of Healing Illinois is to foster a deeper understanding of racial healing and equity among the diverse communities in Illinois. This understanding is vital to dismantling the deeply rooted structures of systemic racism that have persisted for generations.
Strengthening Trust and Relationships: Healing Illinois recognizes the importance of trust and relationships in building bridges among community residents. By nurturing these bonds, the initiative aims to break down barriers and foster greater unity.
Expanding Opportunities for Healing: Healing Illinois acknowledges the deep-seated pain and harm caused by racism. Therefore, it seeks to create opportunities for communities and individuals to begin the process of healing, allowing them to overcome the scars of the past and build a more inclusive future.
Increasing Awareness and Media Engagement: Another critical aspect of the initiative is to raise awareness and encourage media engagement on racial healing and equity. By increasing the visibility of these efforts, Healing Illinois hopes to inspire more individuals and organizations to join the cause.
United Way of Central Illinois: A Catalyst for Change
United Way of Central Illinois, a prominent non-profit organization known for its commitment to mobilizing the local community, is serving as an intermediary for the Healing Illinois initiative. This involvement allows local nonprofits to drive community-based conversations throughout Central Illinois.
"United Way of Central Illinois is excited to partner with the Field Foundation to develop opportunities of inclusivity in our communities," stated Marne Fauser, CEO & President of United Way of Central Illinois. "This initiative aligns with our mission, and we are looking forward to working as part of a team with the Illinois Department of Human Services and the Field Foundation of Illinois to make a positive impact."
United Way of Central Illinois will serve as the intermediary of funds for Region 4 of the state. This region includes 28 counties between Adams County to the West and Edgar County to the East. Grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to community-based organizations of all sizes to help create community-centric, inclusive spaces to talk, learn, and grow. United Way will be assembling a committee, comprised of dedicated, involved community members from Region 4, to review and evaluate the grant proposals. Program funding will be distributed after the new year in early 2024.
The Healing Illinois initiative recognizes that the journey toward equitable work is not without its challenges. However, it emphasizes that the collective effort of the community is essential in achieving lasting change. Healing Illinois is not only a call to action but also an invitation to be part of a movement that promises to create a brighter and more equitable future for all.
A Brighter Future for Illinois
The collaboration between United Way of Central Illinois and the Field Foundation brings the spirit of collaboration that aligns with each community. Each community is unique, and this partnership allows for local nonprofits to develop opportunities that will speak to their community.
As Healing Illinois continues to grow and expand its reach, we can expect to see even greater transformations in communities throughout the state. It is a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of Illinois that they are ready and willing to engage in the vital work of racial healing and equity.
