United Way Helps Expand STEM Opportunities for Petersburg Youth

At United Way of Central Illinois, we believe that every child deserves access to opportunities that inspire learning and personal growth. That’s why we’re proud to support the Petersburg Public Library’s expansion of its Learning to Do @ Library After-School STEM program which will benefit Petersburg youth. Thanks to United Way funding at the end of 2024, this vital program will now serve 3rd and 4th-grade students in addition to the 5th-8th graders who already benefit from it.

This program addresses a critical need in the community, where rural living creates significant challenges for after-school programming and transportation. At-risk students often fall behind in STEM knowledge and skills, but Learning to Do @ Library provides a safe, engaging environment for learning and growth.

With hands-on projects like building kaleidoscopes, designing roller coasters, and experimenting with food science, students will explore real-world STEM applications while building confidence and developing lifelong skills. In partnership with PORTA CUSD #202, the library is also providing coordinated transportation to ensure equitable access for all students, including those who are homeschooled.

In 2025, this expanded program will offer 24 sessions during the school year and additional summer programming, reaching 160 new students and helping bridge the educational gap for rural youth. By fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, we are helping build a stronger community for future generations.

Thanks to United Way dollars, this program will impact local children today and provide a foundation for their future.
