United Way of Central Illinois is proud to support the SHA-STARS program, an initiative funded at the end of 2024 to provide critical afterschool support to K-5 students in the Johnson Park neighborhood. This program aligns with our mission to create lasting change by addressing educational inequities, fostering personal growth, and strengthening community connections.
Why Youth Opportunity Matters
Children in the Johnson Park neighborhood face unique challenges. Many are bussed far from their homes, limiting access to afterschool programs and resources. These barriers can lead to significant gaps in education, access, and opportunity. With United Way funding, the SHA-STARS program directly addresses these issues by creating a safe, accessible environment where students can thrive academically and socially.
A Holistic Approach to Student Success
The SHA-STARS program offers:
-
Academic Support: Two certified teachers will provide targeted instruction to improve literacy and STEM skills, laying a strong foundation for academic success.
-
Enrichment Activities: Students will participate in arts, math, science, environmental studies, and more, sparking creativity and critical thinking.
-
Healthy Nutrition: Each session includes a healthy snack for students and an evening meal for their families, ensuring no one goes hungry.
-
Mentorship Opportunities: Up to 36 older students (grades 6-12) will volunteer, developing leadership skills and fostering a sense of community.
The Impact
United Way’s investment in the SHA-STARS program goes beyond academics to create lasting change. By addressing educational inequities and providing resources often out of reach for low-income families, this program helps students overcome barriers to success. Regular engagement is expected to improve student attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism which is a key factor in academic performance and future success. Involvement will strengthen family-school relationships which will enhance trust and collaboration. The overall goal is to foster a supportive, connected community in Johnson Park.
Looking Ahead
This initiative is just the beginning of what’s possible when a community comes together to support its youngest members. The SHA-STARS program exemplifies the power of collaboration and the transformative impact of targeted resources and support.
Stay tuned as we share stories of progress and success from the SHA-STARS program. Together, with your support, we’re building brighter futures for our students and creating lasting change in our community.
